Can Ranching Really Be Profitable?

This year, more than any year I remember, I’ve heard people at meetings I attend dismiss the notion of “ranching for profit.” They don’t think it is possible. It’s not hard to understand how they’ve come to that conclusion.

In the last four decades, input costs have gone up 5 times faster than cattle prices. Oil prices have gone up nearly 10 times faster. Property values have little or no connection to the productive potential of the land and, the fact is, the vast majority of ranches are not profitable.

These, and other factors, are contributing to a declining population of families who make their living from ranching. But the issue isn’t, and has never been, about how tough things are. The issue is what are we going to do about it? It isn’t the situation but our response that counts.

This newsletter is about responding.

Can You Walk The Talk?

Many Ranching For Profit School alumni have used the ICA process to get everyone in their business on the same page and develop a vision statement for the ranch team. Money Matters

What we were taught by others and learned through our own experiences about money when we were very young has a profound effect on the beliefs and behaviors we have as adults. Our “financial blueprint” influences how much money we make and save and how we feel about money. Money Matters is a workshop I’ll conduct at our next Executive Link to help members understand and improve their personal financial blueprint. All RFP alumni are invited to attend. To learn more click on the link below.
