This year, more than any year I remember, I’ve heard people at meetings I attend dismiss the notion of “ranching for profit.” They don’t think it is possible. It’s not hard to understand how they’ve come to that conclusion.
In the last four decades, input costs have gone up 5 times faster than cattle prices. Oil prices have gone up nearly 10 times faster. Property values have little or no connection to the productive potential of the land and, the fact is, the vast majority of ranches are not profitable.
These, and other factors, are contributing to a declining population of families who make their living from ranching. But the issue isn’t, and has never been, about how tough things are. The issue is what are we going to do about it? It isn’t the situation but our response that counts.
